Various sites closing

For trademark policy-related reasons, several websites of mine will be removed once Linden Lab’s 90 day grace period is up. I really do not have the time or interest to go about jumping nonsensical legal hoops.

The sites closing are the following:

  • TSL Profiles
  • TSL Blogs
  • TSL Emporium (which was defunct anyway)
Additionally, a couple of other projects I was working on are cancelled. The Teen SL Blog has moved to teenmetaverse.net.
Thank you, Linden Lab, for obliterating months of work. It is appreciated. I hate you people (or at least whoever came up with this stupid idea.)

I think they have the right to trademark their stuff. After all, it is theirs.
It is unfortunate, though, that they didn’t do it since the very beginning.
I hope there’s some serious learning going on in all the sides of the conflict.

    “:D You’re being watched.”

    Help my paranoia, Kathy!!!! x.x
    Anyhow, log on.

  3. 3 Katharine Berry

Actually, they don’t have the right, as far as I can tell. But nobody’s going to bother to take this anywhere.

Well, Katharine, you’ve had a good run. Unfortunately the man has come to shut you down. I’ve loved your services, but must say, I’m glad to see them going down like this (compared to you leaving “the world of Second Life” <– There, LL can’t sue you now).
Man, I wonder what LL will do next to fuck themselves up even more?

Bah. It’s pathetic. I talked to MG’ers at SLCC who said they’d love to have something like TSLP on the MG. Pity.

Then main grid equivelant of TSLP is
    http://slbuzz.com

the fun thing about ajaxlife is that LL don’t like ajaxlife’s proxy ip since tons of people login through it (or they just don’t like ajaxlife period), and that makes them ban your avatar, then you have to go through anxiety and panic attacks and fight like crazy to get it unbanned. yipee

Actually they do like it, and it doesn’t go through a login proxy (any more) – so the IP changes frequently.

And I’ve had no reports of anyone being banned for using it. Unless that is a report, in which case I’ve had one.

*coughs* People love AjaxLife, including Iridium and Blue Linden I believe. Legal stuff will always be there, but it’s best to brush yourself and look forward to other things, like working on this wonderful creation that is AjaxLife!

    Great work Katherine!

I think you’re wrong this time, Katharine. LL is badly managing the trademarks issue, but they’re not doing anything new under the corporations sun. This is common practice in industry.
So, you don’t need to close anything. But you’re free to do it, so do it.

That said, keep up the good work. You’re a great developer.

  11. 11 Katharine Berry

#10, I never said it was new – however, as far as I can tell, if they’re claiming on “SL,” my right to use “sl” in a name is somewhat dubious anyway.

  12. 12 Chilko

Agreed, it’s total bull that they can claim a trademark on the two letters “SL” what if a ran a company called, Standford Limestone, and i abbreviate it, and they come after me? Wait, Kath, can they even sue you since you’re a) a minor, and b) in the UK.

  13. 13 Katharine Berry

Stanford Limestone is unlikely to be in the business of virtual worlds and similar, which is the only area in which Linden Lab’s trademark applies. So you’d be fine.

  14. 14 Cory Bjornson

Shutting down TSLP? Ohm come on now, LL. Why must you fail us (LL).

  15. 15 Cory Bjornson

In fact, LL probably has a Vendetta against Katharine.

  16. 16 Katharine Berry

    Not that I know of.

Incidentally, the closing date is “When I get round to it, if LL actually publicise the passing of the 90 day limit, or when they send me angry letters.”
