AjaxLife imagery

AjaxLife login image

This image, currently used on AjaxLife’s login page, would appear to now be explicitly forbidden. Short of just removing it entirely, anyone feel like coming up with a legal alternative that can go on the top-right of the login screen?

    Katharine,
Can you state exactly what is explicitly forbidden and the exact reasons why? This might allow us to come up with something that has the same feel without the illegality.

Unless you’d just prefer to come up with something totally different.

The use of the Eye-in-Hand Logo® and “Second Life®” trademark is explicitly forbidden, as of yesterday. So most of it. :P

Yes, I just saw that on the Linden blog and was going to withdraw my question. :)

Hmm, i’ll try to create something in InkScape. (That will also have the added bonus of being able to scale it to infinity times inifinity! [theoretically, as it is Scalable Vector Graphics]) However, if you know how to work with InkScape, you can simply go online to OpenClipArt.org, search for your idea of the basic appearance, download your chosen file, modify it to be AjaxLife’s logo, and you’re done! (Of course, include an attribution as well. Some people worked hard on this! ;-) )

Or, you could use my version of the SL logo. (That according to Wikipedia, is considered self-made work as it is a modified icon. The fact no one touched it for a month now, proves it, hehe. I remember having a term on Wiktionary taken down after less than a minute due to a violation. It was not too widely used. :-S)

Could you use the inSL logo instead? I know it’s kinda weird to have an “inSL” client, but at least you won’t get LL knocking your door down at 3am and impounding your servers.

I know what would be good to replace the hand with – http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/77/MontyPythonFootLeftSmall.jpg :)

    I’ll give it a shot.

I will be completely honest. LL not allowing you to use their logo for a service that hooks mainly to their service is a load of bull. I think that if they open-sourced their client, they should open-source their logos.

As for me creating one, I would, but I don’t have Photoshop setup (I’m on Ubuntu, and haven’t got it on WINE yet).

The best of luck with dealing with LL.

It may be worth contact LL about it, they might just give you permission to use it.

You can always make your own logo. Drawing a new green version of the eye-in-hand thing works. Damn, even make it pink if you want. :p
Well. That’s assuming they didn’t copyright any expression of the eye-in-hand idea ;)

  11. 11 Smiley Barry

@Mariel: They can’t copyright a general symbol :P The “eye-in-hand” symbol is a Jewish religious symbol, if they copyrighted that, that’s like copyrighting the general cross symbol ;) .

And, seems as my comment still hasn’t passed moderation for some reason, *AHEM* too-many-image-links *AHEM*, i’ll say here that i’ll try to do something with InkScape and Photoshop, if i’ll use only InkScape it will have the ability to be scaled infinity times infinity! :D

Actually, the SL logo is a blatant rip-off of the Chick-Fil-A logo. Just the C part, that is. I noticed that the other day while eating dinner.

    http://www.chick-fil-a.com

As for SL not wanting an outside source to use their logo, even if it promotes their product, it’s totally understandable. Katharine is outside their control. If she uses their logo and AjaxLife sucks, or she starts doing something dishonest with it, it reflects back to them.

Companies have to protect their brand from getting sullied by outside interests. And, I know that Katharine isn’t going to do that, and you know that, and maybe even some of the bigwigs at SL know that. But, it has to be a blanket rule. Unless Katharine is willing to cede some control of her site to SL, there’s no way they’re going to be flexible on this.

Not true, as with everything, they can grant Katharine permission to use it under conditions, such as, “The eye-in-hand logo can be used with in AjaxLife as long as there is clear indication that AjaxLife is not product of LindenLabs, and that AjaxLife is merely and 3rd Party Viewer”. Whether they would or not is a different matter, and if they did, what conditions they’d place over Katharines usuage of it would be something to watch for also.

Though I suspect Katharine would rather have her own logo than go through the fuss of obtaining permission from LL to use theirs.

Just change ‘Second’ to ‘Ajax’ and put ‘AJAX’ over the eye in hand logo in bright red (or whatever color you want..)

    @Smiley Barry: I was being sarcastic :p

@Meghan: I know I shouldn’t reply in her name, but we’re on the teen grid. :-S (Sorry if you are too, I assumed you’re on the main grid :-S)

@Katharine: I finished my version, a while ago, forgot to link hehe. Here it is.

  18. 18 Donna

    @ Smiley.

You know, I left last night and realised “Tsk. she’s on TSL.”
Well I can probably get the example textures to her even on TSL, but I am not allowed to Speak to her, however we can email and such. : )

At the minute i’m having PC Troubles anyway, but all should be fixed by next week : )

If you still wanna see the Textures then email me your In World names and I will see if I can get them to you on TSL.

sorry off topic, but is the server down ?

  21. 21 Katharine Berry

Unfortunately, yes. The inconsistent state bug has recurred – which implies something is crashing something unexpectedly. Now to figure out why. >.>

  22. 22 Smiley Barry

@Katharine: Sorry to be a pain, and I know I may receive a very ugly and bad review over my logo idea if I do this, but, how’s my logo for the job?

  23. 23 Katharine Berry

You’ve now posted that here twice and emailed it to me. I don’t like it.

    Thanks for trying though.
