Linden Lab have finally announced that they are bringing voice to Second Life, to much enthusiastic cheering, and a roughly equal amount of screaming about how horrible and evil this is. You just can’t please everyone.
My personal opinion is against this, for the same reason that I dislike Skype (and every other VoIP solution) – I can’t speak, so I’m left out. Not as left out as I would be if I was deaf, but left out none-the-less. LL has orginally planned to have text-to-speech and speech-to-text support in this, which I would have been fine with. TTS systems for all intents and purpose are my voice, given that they’re the only things I use when I wish to say something.
Unfortunately, I can find no mention of this in their announcement, implying that there will not be a system in place. As this is the case, when the system rolls out I will be disabling across Foobar Salad, regardless of what anyone else there might think about it. This may be selfish, but I’m the one paying for the land, and I say no. Although if anyone can find something in that post that I missed about TTS support, please tell me. >.>
Also, SL is down until 7PM. Bleh.
[5:27 GMT ] And SL is already back up. Something is changing at LL, for the better.
Katharine, Can I send your blog entry to the discussion on this topic on the SL educators listserv?
Barry
Sure, if you want.
